Race report
Filippo Ganna takes his teammate Egan Bernal in tow right on the first climb, the Alto de la Escondida. As the peloton gets back to them, Giulio Ciccone and Brandon Smith Rivera set off. Also to no avail.

The decisive move comes on the descent. A large group – featuring strong climbers like Giulio Ciccone, Mikel Landa, Santiago Buitrago, Eddie Dunbar, Egan Bernal and Antonio Tiberi – opens up a gap, but the attacks never becomes threatening. At no point during the day does the lead stretch beyond 2 minutes.

On the Puerto de Navacerrada, the breakaway is still made up of Bernard, Ciccone, Aparicio, Landa, Bernal, Van der Lee, Armirail, Buitrago, López, Braz Afonso, Dunbar, Tiberi and Hirt. The peloton crests the summit with a 1 minute deficit.

On the descent, Bernal, Armirail, Ciccone, Landa and Van der Lee pull clear, after which Landa goes into the final climb alone. Ciccone overhauls him on the early slopes, but the Basque regains contact.

Landa and Ciccone’s move is on its last legs as they swing right onto the Bola del Mundo, and it doesn’t take long before the front group is reduced to Jonas Vingegaard, João Almeida, Tom Pidcock, Jai Hindley and Sepp Kuss.

Hindley kicks with a little over 2 kilometres to the summit. Pidcock struggles, but manages to claw his way back. Then it’s Vingegaard who has the final word. With 1.2 kilometres to go, the Dane launches his attack and, centimetre by centimetre, builds a safe advantage on the steep gradients. While soloing to his third stage win, he also seals overall victory in the 2025 Vuelta a España.
