Race report
It takes roughly 40 kilometres for the breakaway to form. Then Marc Soler, Andrea Bagioli, Mikel Landa, Mauri Vansevenant, Egan Bernal, Bob Jungels, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Nico Denz, Sean Quinn, Finlay Pickering, Clément Braz Afonso, Rudy Molard, Brieuc Rolland, Victor Guernalec, Louis Rolland, Kevin Vermaerke and Jaks Stewart join forces to open up a lead of 4 minutes over the peloton in no time.

The gap gradually widens by another minute, after which Landa attacks on the Alto de Groba. Bernal, Rolland and Braz Afonso bridge across to him. Denz rejoins them on descent.

On the Alto de Prado, the peloton is already 8 minutes down on the leaders when Denz is soon distanced. Rolland doesn’t make it over the top with the front group either. A puncture in the final 16 kilometres – which, on closer inspection, turns out to be the last 8 – also puts Braz Afonso’s hopes of a stage win to an end.

It’s very late in the stage, but around the moment Braz Afonso punctures, the riders are informed that the finish has been moved from the top to the foot of the final climb. That changes the entire finale’s dynamics dramatically, and in an anticlimax, Bernal outsprints Landa. The stage winner crosses the line not cheering, but shaking his head.

Most of the GC contenders reach that point just under 6 minutes later. Felix Gall and Junior Lecerf are the only riders from the top 10 to lose time.
