Race report
A large breakaway forms in a fast opening phase, with Mads Pedersen, Antonio Tiberi, Rémi Cavagna and Bob Jungels as the stand-out names. Also on board are Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Michel Hessmann, Tim van Dijke, Gianmarco Garofoli, Edward Planckaert, Roman Ermakov, Nickolas Zukowsky, David González, Nicolas Vinokurov, Clément Braz Afonso, Joel Nicolau, Guillermo Thomas Silva, Anders Foldager, Léandre Lozouet, Thierry Pierre, Huub Artz, Kamiel Bonneu, Jonas Gregaard, José Luis Faura and Ethan Vernon, while Ivo Oliveira makes the junction after a 50-kilometre chase.

As they tackle the Alto La Mozqueta, the leaders hold a gap of just under 4 minutes on the peloton.

While climbing, the group whittles down to Jungels, Cepeda, Garofoli, Vinokurov and Tiberi, with the latter dropping back on the descent after a mechanical.

Pedersen consolidates his lead in the points classification before letting go, so the breakaway tackles the Alto del Cordal with just four riders remaining. Garofoli drops back, unable to keep pace with the other three.

Jungels, Cepeda and Vinokurov reach the base of the Angliru 2 minutes and 22 seconds ahead of the peloton. Cepeda loses contact, and once the steep section begins, Jungels is left alone at the front.

Tom Pidcock struggles in the GC group before being dropped, leaving Jonas Vingegaard, João Almeida, Jai Hindley and Sepp Kuss to reel in the soloist.

Vingegaard and Almeida head out together with 4.5 kilometres left to climb. From the moment the Angliru ramps up, it’s the Portuguese rider who dictates the pace, and he continues to do so all the way to the finish, meaning he takes the spoils.

Vingegaard retains the red jersey, with Almeida and Pidcock holding on to second and third, although the Brit concedes more than 1 minute.
