Race report
It takes roughly 100 kilometres before the break of the day is formed. It’s a large group, with among them Jay Vine, Mikkel Bjerg, Pablo Castrillo, Harold Tejada, Gijs Leemreize, Louis Vervaeke, Michał Kwiatkowski, Bruno Armirail, Joel Nicolau, Javier Romo, Johannes Staune-Mittet, Junior Lecerf, Sean Quinn, Kevin Vermaerke, Alec Balderstone, Alec Segaert, Nicola Conci, Julien Bernard, Archie Ryan and Xabier Mikel Azparren.
Romo attacks on the Alto de Las Coronas and Vine sets off in pursuit. The two come together on the descent, while Bernard, Castrillo, Ryan, Azparren, Conci, Segaert, Vermaerke and Balderstone bridge across later. The breakaway reaches a maximum lead of just over three minutes.
Segaert slips away with 18 kilometres to go, hitting the final climb 40 seconds ahead of his former companions. Castrillo breaks away from the rest and catches the Belgian with 8 kilometres to the summit.
While Vine and Ryan give chase, UAE Emirates ramps up the pace in the peloton, causing red jersey Torstein Træen to be dropped.
Vine catches Castrillo in the final 5.5 kilometres, and shortly afterwards the King of the Mountains pushes on solo to claim his second stage win.
The pace eases in the favourites’ group, with most of the GC contenders crossing the line together. So Jonas Vingegaard regains the red jersey from Træen. The Norwegian drops to second, while João Almeida remains third.
