Race report
Louis Vervaeke, Sean Quinn, Joel Nicolau, Kamiel Bonneu and Mario Apricio initiate the break in the last part of the Puerto Exilles. Nicolau is the first to crest the climb, while Vervaeke takes the most KOM points on the Col de Montgenèvre. The breakaway’s lead is then around 4 minutes.
At the foot of the Col du Lautaret the gap has come down to just over 2 minutes, but it widens again on the climb. With an attack in the final kilometre, Quinn takes the most KOM points on the Lautaret. Nicolau crests in second place, thus taking over the lead in the mountains classification from Alessandro Verre.
All the while, Lidl-Trek has been setting the pace in the peloton.
With roughly 90 kilometres remaining, it’s already over for the breakaway. Sinuhé Fernández then heads off on a solo move of several dozen kilometres.
After the intermediate sprint, won by Mads Pedersen, it’s Bruno Armirail’s turn to launch a solo move. His effort comes to an end with 15 kilometres remaining and then it’s up to the fast men.
Due to a miscommunication with his lead-out Edward Planckaert, Jasper Philipsen’s sprint doesn’t come off as planned. In contrast, Ben Turner rockets to the biggest win of his career.
David Gaudu moves ahead of Jonas Vingegaard in the GC, even though they remain on the same time.
