Vuelta 2026: Route and stages

Enric Mas won the 81st edition of the Vuelta a España ahead of Primoz Roglic and Felix Gall. Following Tadej Pogacar’s abandonment on stage 8, the Spaniard seized control of the race and held on to the red jersey all the way to the finish. Matthew Brennan was the most prolific stage hunter, claiming five victories. The 2026 Vuelta a España started in Monaco on Saturday 22 August and finished in Granada on Sunday 13 September.

Route

La Vuelta a España packs 57,079 metres of elevation gain into a 3,298.5-kilometre route. The race starts in Monaco before gradually heading south towards the finish in Granada. Along the way, the riders face several brutal summit finishes, including Alto de Aitana, Calar Alto, Peñas Blancas and the monstrous Collado del Alguacil in the Sierra Nevada.

Granada - Granada

Sunday 13 September - At 112 kilometres, the final stage of the Vuelta a España unfolds in and around Granada. A finishing circuit is completed four times, each lap featuring a partially cobbled climb of 2.1 kilometre at 6.6%. On the final passage, the finish line is positioned at the bottom of that climb.

La Calahorra - Collado del Alguacil

Saturday 12 September - With nearly 4,900 metres of climbing packed into 186.8 kilometres, the penultimate stage of the Vuelta is an absolute brute. The riders face four intermediate climbs, often at extreme gradients, before finishing atop the Collado del Alguacil, an 8.3-kilometre climb at 9.8%.

Vélez-Málaga - Peñas Blancas

Friday 11 September - Stage 19 of the Vuelta covers 210.8 kilometres between Vélez-Málaga and the summit of Peñas Blancas. Three climbs precede the final challenge, 18.8 kilometres at 6.5%, with the race totalling 4,054 metres of elevation gain.

El Puerto Santa María - Jerez de la Frontera

Thursday 10 September - The second individual time trial of the Vuelta takes the riders from El Puerto de Santa María to Jerez de la Frontera. Featuring 217 metres of climbing, the 32.1-kilometre course is virtually flat.
