Vuelta 2026 Route stage 16: Cortegana - La Rábida

Vuelta a España 2026 Tuesday 8 September - At 186 kilometres, stage 16 of the Vuelta a España takes the riders from Cortegana to La Rábida. The first part of the route hilly and the second flat.

The stage starts in Cortegana, nestled between two mountain ranges at an altitude of 650 metres. The riders remain at roughly that elevation for the first 40 kilometres, climbing and descending almost constantly. None of the climbs are particularly long or steep, but there are plenty of them, making for ideal terrain for an animated opening phase as riders battle to get into the breakaway.

Whether the breakaway can stay away all the way to the finish is another matter. After cresting the day's final climb at kilometre 100 – a 4.5-kilometre ascent averaging 4.5% – the riders enter the plains of Huelva. From there, the route is predominantly flat.

The finish is at La Rábida, a Franciscan monastery in Palos de la Frontera, from where Christopher Columbus set sail on his voyage to the Americas. Situated on the banks of the Odiel River, it provides direct access to the Atlantic Ocean – an ideal departure point for an explorer.

One final note on the route: if it comes down to a sprint, timing will be crucial, as the final kilometre rises on a false flat.
