Race report
Luca Van Boven, Sean Quinn, Patrick Gamper and Alessandro Verre form the day’s breakaway. The quartet opens a gap of over 2 minutes.

On the Puerto Issiglio, Quinn and Verre ride clear of the other two before wins the sprint or KOM points. Verre wins the KOM sprint at the summit, taking the polka dot jersey off Vingegaard.

With roughly 40 kilometres to go, Verre decides he’s had enough and lets Quinn go solo. The American’s effort is neutralised with 19 kilometres remaining.

The pace is fierce on the final climb to Ceres. Jasper Philipsen drops back early, while Giulio Ciccone delivers the lead-out for Mads Pedersen in the final phase. It looks like the winning formula, but David Gaudu spoils the party with a perfectly timed corner just before the line. The Frenchman takes the win, leaving Pedersen in second place.

Jonas Vingegaard crosses the line in third, retaining the red jersey, with Gaudu moving up to second overall on exactly the same time.
