Race report
Mads Pedersen launches an attack on the Alto de Laukiz. Joel Nicolau goes with him and the two crest the summit together.

Pedersen forges ahead solo on the Alto de Sollube, but with 4 kilometres left on the ascent, the front of the peloton sweeps past him. He doesn’t throw in the towel though; as the road levels out, the Dane pushes on with Marc Soler and Orluis Aular. The three build a maximum lead of one and a half minutes, while Visma | Lease a Bike controls the pace in the peloton throughout.

Once the gap drops to half a minute, Soler drops the other two on the Alto de Morga. He initially pulls away, but his solo ends in the run-up to the Alto del Vivero.

On the climb, Mikel Landa launches an attack and he reaches the summit with Santiago Buitrago. Back in Bilbao, with one lap to go, the two have a 40-second lead over a chasing group containing Mads Pedersen, Victor Campenaerts, Eddie Dunbar, Louis Rouland, Kamiel Bonneu and Juan Guillermo Martinez.

Not long after, the peloton catches the group of six, while Landa has to drop off the front. Buitrago pushes on alone, but before the top the GC contenders reel him back in.

Tom Pidcock drops his rivals on the Alto de Pike. The Brit reaches the summit with a slender lead over Jonas Vingegaard. The two come together on the plateau shortly thereafter and cooperate well until the 3-kilometre mark, where the times are taken.
