Race report
Jakub Otruba attacks from the flag. He rides 2 minutes clear of the peloton, while plenty of action unfolds behind him. A host of riders – including Jay Vine, Michał Kwiatkowski, Mads Pedersen, Giulio Ciccone, Carlos Verona, Stefan Küng, Egan Bernal, Nico Denz, Magnus Sheffield, Santiago Buitrago, Marco Frigo, Jake Stewart, Edward Planckaert, Junior Lecerf, Eddie Dunbar, Louis Vervaeke and Orluis Aular – try to bridge across, with only King of the Mountains Vine managing to make the junction on the climb, and he crests it first.
A lead group of 45 riders emerges after the summit, including all the aforementioned names.
Vine and Vervaeke ride clear on the Alto de Barbeitos, with the Australian taking the KOM sprint at the top before the duo press on. By that point it’s clear that the peloton is happy to let things be, and that the stage winner will come from the breakaway.
The duo opens up a maximum lead of 3 minutes, but meanwhile it has come down to under 1 minute when Bernal and Buitrago attack inside the final 32 kilometres. Pedersen is first to bridge across to the two before Sheffield, Aular, Dunbar and Frigo also make the junction.
The seven catch up with Vine and Vervaeke in the final 7 kilometres, after which hardly any serious attacks follow. Only Frigo makes a move with around 500 metres to go, unintentionally acting as a lead-out for Pedersen, who takes the sprint convincingly.
The peloton crosses the line more than 13 minutes later. The GC remains unchanged, although attacker Lecerf sneaks into the top 10.
