Race report
The break only forms after 25 kilometres, when a group of 22 riders forges clear. Mads Pedersen, Marc Soler, Stefan Küng, Magnus Sheffield, Michal Kwiatkowski, Nico Denz and Søren Kragh Andersen are the standout names up front.
On the Alto de Alisas, another 19 riders bridge across, including Juan Ayuso, Victor Campenaerts, Pablo Castrillo, Bruno Armirail, Louis Vervaeke, Mikel Landa, Santiago Buitrago, Eddie Dunbar, Lorenzo Fortunato, Harold Tejada, and Javier Romo. On the flat, the breakaway later swells to 52 riders.
The gap between the breakaway and the peloton widens to 5 minutes, after which six riders escape from the rest in the run-up to the Collada de Brenes: Michel Hessmann, James Shaw, Finlay Pickering, Brieuc Rolland, Victor Guernalec and Magnus Sheffield.
Shaw, Pickering and Rolland break away from that group, only to be overhauled by Ayuso with 3 kilometres remaining. Romo latches on to his compatriot and the two reach the summit 20 seconds ahead of Rolland. The first group of chasers is about 10 seconds further back.
Romo and Ayuso work well together and stay clear, before the latter plays his cards in the streets of Los Corrales del Buelna. In the sprint, he powers to a convincing victory, his second of this Vuelta.
The peloton crosses the line more than 6 minutes later, leaving the GC largely unchanged, although attacker Armirail moves into sixth place.
