Race report
Jay Vine, Louis Vervaeke, Pablo Castrillo, Lorenzo Fortunato, Bruno Armirail, Torstein Træen, Gianmarco Garofoli, Ramses Debruyne, Archie Ryan and James Shaw break away on the first climb of the day. Vine takes the most KOM points at the summit.
The attackers crest the Collada de Toses with a lead of 4 minutes over the peloton, where Vervaeke pips Vine to the top. This puts the Belgian in the virtual polka dot jersey, taking it off Joel Nicolau.
The attackers open a maximum lead of 7 minutes.
The gap falls to 4 minutes on the Alto de la Comella, while Vine bags the most KOM points at the summit before attacking on the descent.
Last year’s King of the Mountains in the Vuelta tackles the final climb 1 minute ahead of the chasers, where Træen drops the other. Meanwhile, Juan Ayuso is dropped from the peloton.
Vine rides to victory with ease, and Træen finishes in second to move into the overall race lead.
