A crash in the rain-soaked second stage made Guillaume Martin the first rider to abandon the Vuelta. The Frenchman pulled out with two fractured vertebrae.
The 2024 runner-up, Ben O’Connor, called it quits on stage 13, on the way to El Angliru, when he was languishing in 25th place overall.

In 2024, La Vuelta started with 176 riders, 39 of whom did not reach the finish in Madrid. After a crash in stage 2, Dylan van Baarle was the first rider to abandon. João Almeida was the first GC contender forced to quit, as he had contracted COVID-19. Antonio Tiberi, who at the time was leading the young riders classification, failed to complete stage 9 due to heatstroke.
Three-time stage winner Wout van Aert abandoned in stage 16 after a crash on the descent of the Collada Llomena. At that point, he was leading both the mountains and points classifications.
