Race report
In a lively opening phase, a large breakaway forms: Mikkel Bjerg, Marc Soler, Victor Campenaerts, Andrea Bagioli, Carlos Verona, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Nico Denz, Tim van Dijke, James Shaw, Bruno Armirail, Léo Bisiaux, Jordan Labrosse, Johannes Staune-Mittet, Finlay Pickering, Fausto Masnada, Pierre Thierry, Sergio Samitier, Jesús Herrada, Dion Smith, Kevin Vermaerke, Jan Hirt, Xabier Mikel Azparren and Gianmarco Garofoli. Campenaerts is dropped after a puncture forces him onto a neutral service bike, but he regains contact – along with Gijs Leemreize – after a long chase.

As the lead group tackles the Puerto de San Lorenzo, the peloton trails at 6 minutes. Driven by UAE Emirates, the gap falls to under 4 minutes on the climb, before Shaw crests the summit first from the heavily reduced lead group and he pushes on straight into the descent.

Before the final climb Shaw is reeled back in, and that’s when Soler makes his move, with Staune-Mittet joining him. The Spaniard forges on until the Norwegian cracks.

Soler rides more than 1 minute clear of his former companions, hitting the steep second part of La Farrapona 3 minutes ahead of the GC contenders.

While all the other attackers are reeled in by the favourites’ group, Soler holds firm. He takes the stage win, with Jonas Vingegaard beating João Almeida by 39 seconds in the sprint for second place.
