Race report
The breakway features Pepijn Reiderink, Nicolas Vinokurov, Joel Nicolau, Koen Bouwman, Hugo de la Calle and Alessandro Verre. They open up a 2-minute lead.

At La Serra, Verre takes the sprint for the mountain points, claiming the first polka-dot jersey.

After the intermediate sprint, the breakaway waits for the peloton, although De la Calle has other ideas. He presses on alone, building a maximum lead of 1 minute before being caught well before the finish, leaving it to the fast men.

Jasper Philipsen proves to be by far the quickest in the sprint. Ethan Vernon and Orluis Aular are no match, as the Belgian adds the Vuelta’s first red jersey to the first yellow he claimed last July in the Tour
