Race report
In a lively opening phase, it takes over an hour before the break forms. Michal Kwiatkowski and Archie Ryan join forces to open up a gap of half a minute, but it doesn’t come easy. Liam Slock and Michel Hessmann join them, and they’re not the only ones eager to get across. The peloton closes to within 10 seconds when Kevin Vermaerke also makes the jump.
The bunch keeps chasing, but the five edge away, metre by metre. They open up a gap of nearly 3 minutes before being caught at the foot of the finish climb.
Jonas Vingegaard launches an attack with 11 kilometres to go, and only Giulio Ciccone can follow — that is, for just 1 kilometre, before the Dane goes solo.
João Almeida, Tom Pidcock and Felix Gall catch up with Ciccone and leave him behind. The Austrian loses contact with 7 kilometres to climb.
Meanwhile, Vingegaard powers on to take his second stage win. Pidcock beats Almeida 24 seconds later for second place, while red jersey holder Torstein Træen crosses the line 1 minute 46 seconds behind in the group with most of the GC contenders, retaining the overall lead.
