Race report
The breakaway of the day forms straight out of the start. Mattéo Vercher, Jonas Rutsch, Mathis Le Berre, Bruno Armirail, and Benjamin Thomas put 2 minutes into the peloton. That’s all they get.
Following crashes by Filippo Ganna and Stefan Bissegger, the peloton picks up the pace in response to looming crosswinds. That spells the end of the breakaway with still 105 kilometers to the finish.
Jonathan Milan takes the intermediate sprint, and right after, Vercher goes on the attack again, while Thomas jumps across to him. The two open up a 1-minute lead.
After the sprint for KOM points in Cassel, Thomas crashes, taking Vercher down as well. The crash puts an abrupt end to the second break of the day. Not much later, Ganna abandons the Tour. Bissegger pulls out with less than 50 kilometres to go.
With 17 kilometers to go, the peloton splits. Jonathan Milan, Tim Merlier, Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic and João Almeida are on the wrong side of the break. The front group, with Alpecin-Deceuninck and Visma | Lease a Bike setting the pace, increases the gap to 40 seconds.
Jasper Philipsen sprints to a convincing victory in the streets of Lille, with Biniam Girmay crossing the line in second and Søren Wærenskjold in third. As a result, Philipsen takes both the yellow and green jerseys.
Jonathan Milan wins the sprint of the second group 39 seconds later, but Lenny Martinez takes the biggest hit. The young French hope was on the back foot all day and rolls into Lille more than 9 minutes down.
