Race report
The opening phase is marked by a flurry of attacks. Marco Haller, Marc Hirschi and Xandro Meurisse succeed in opening up a gap, and while the turbulence in the bunch continues for tens of kilometres, the trio holds its lead.
An hour into the race, the peloton finally settles down, allowing the three leaders to stretch their advantage to more than 1 minute. The calm doesn’t last long though, and after 70 kilometres they are eventually reeled in.
Right away, a fresh breakaway takes shape with Thymen Arensman, Tiesj Benoot, Pavel Sivakov, Victor Campenaerts, Enric Mas, Ilan Van Wilder, Marc Soler, Ben Healy, Julian Alaphilippe, Santiago Buitrago, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Michael Woods and Andreas Leknessund among its ranks.
In the run-up to the intermediate sprint, Thymen Arensman, Julian Alaphilippe, Enric Mas, Fred Wright, Matteo Trentin, Simone Velasco, and Jonas Abrahamsen leave their breakaway companions behind.
As the Tour hits Mont Ventoux, Arensman, Alaphilippe, Mas, and Velasco are the remaining leaders. The first chasers are 1.5 minutes behind, with the peloton trailing by another 5 minutes.
Velasco drops off early, and while Arensman sets the pace, Mas jumps out of his wheel with 14 kilometres remaining to the summit.
The Spaniard opens a 1-minute lead, while Healy, Paret-Peintre and Buitrago rejoin Arensman and Alaphilippe before reaching Chalet Reynard. The two lose contact almost immediately. Further down the mountain, Jonas Vingegaard puts Tadej Pogacar under pressure, causing everyone, except the yellow jersey, to be distanced.
Healy, Paret-Peintre and Buitrago pass Chalet Reynard 40 seconds behind Mas. Vingegaard meets up with his teammate Campenaerts, and together with Pogacar, he reaches the former refuge 3 minutes behind the race leader.
Meanwhile, Healy sets such a relentless pace that only Paret-Peintre can follow, and together they reel in Mas within the final 4 kilometres.
One kilometre later, Paret-Peintre accelerates. Healy responds with a counterattack, and Mas is dropped – that is, for a moment, because another kilometre up the road, he rejoins them, this time with Buitrago on his wheel.
Under the flamme rouge, the Colombian accelerates. Healy and Paret-Peintre immediately follow, while Van Wilder emerges from the peloton. The Belgian takes the lead right away, setting up a uphill lead-out for his teammate Paret-Peintre.
Healy launches the sprint for the steep right-hand bend near the summit’s radio mast. Paret-Peintre comes out of his slipstream as the gradient eases and takes the win.
Later on, Pogacar repeats Healy’s move, but without Vingegaard catching him. On the contrary, the yellow jersey gains 2 seconds.
