Race report
Kasper Asgreen is the day’s first attacker. Behind him, the fight for a spot in the breakaway continues to rage, and on the Col de la Croix de la Serra, the Dane is reeled in. Teammates Neilson Powless and Harry Sweeny take over the attack alongside Raúl García Pierna – also to no avail.
On the descent, Davide Ballerini opens up a gap, but that too comes to nothing. Meanwhile, the pace stays high and the peloton breaks into pieces. Tim Wellens crests the second climb with Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Alexandre Delettre, Jarrad Drizners and Frank van den Broek on his wheel. Matteo Jorgenson and Ewen Costiou also join the action, followed by Pascal Eenkhoorn, Harry Sweeny, Romain Grégoire, Matteo Trentin, Kaden Groves, Iván Romeo, Simone Velasco, Jordan Jegat and Jake Stewart. By then, Paret-Peintre, Delettre and Drizners are no longer on board.
Roughly halfway through, the peloton finally settles down and the lead of the thirteen escapees grows to over 2 minutes.
On the Côte de Thésy, Jegat, who sits 11th in the general classification, climbs away from the other leaders. Sweeny bridges across before the summit. Meanwhile, Axel Laurance breaks away from the peloton, and Wout van Aert, Toms Skujins, Michael Storer, Dylan Teuns, Alexandre Delettre, Warren Barguil, Michael Woods, and Anders Halland Johannessen join him. But it’s too little, too late, as they never come back into contention.
Sweeny drops Jegat with 54 kilometres to go, and while the Frenchman ends up in the chasing group, the Australian opens up a gap of just under a minute on his former breakaway companions and more than 5 minutes on the peloton. Then Eenkhoorn, Grégoire, Groves, Van den Broek and Stewart launch the chase.
Just before the Côte de Longeville, the five chasers are joined by Romeo, Trentin, Velasco and Jegat. On the climb, they catch the lone leader, who then watches the others ride away. Trentin is also dropped.
Romeo crashes hard in a corner, and Grégoire also loses control of his bike. Groves, Van den Broek and Stewart make it through unscathed and form a new breakaway group, but even that proves too crowded for Groves, as he rides clear of the other two with just under 17 kilometres to go. Behind the Australian, the various groups merge.
Stewart and Van den Broek can’t agree on who should lead the chase, allowing the Australian to quickly gain a 40-second gap. He extends this lead and wins the stage, with Van den Broek finishing second and Eenkhoorn breaking away from a group behind to take third place.
