Race report
It’s a dreary, wet start, but that doesn’t stop the riders from going full gas right from the gun. The pace is ferocious, and after an hour of racing, no breakaway has formed, while 51 kilometres have been covered.

Then Mattéo Vercher, Quentin Pacher and Geraint Thomas are the first riders to open up a lead of 30 seconds.

While Mattias Skjelmose crashes hard, the three are caught before the intermediate sprint. Green jersey Jonathan Milan takes the spoils and then it’s time for the Tourmalet. As soon as the road tilts upwards, Remco Evenepoel is distanced.

Thymen Arensman has other plans and sets the pace on the climb. Lenny Martinez and Ben O’Connor take over the lead from him and build a gap of 30 seconds. Martinez then goes solo and carves out a two-minute advantage. The first chasers are Einer Rubio, Enric Mas, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Ben Healy, Gregor Mühlberger, Sepp Kuss, Simon Yates, Aleksandr Vlasov, Carlos Rodriguez, Emiel Verstrynge, Pablo Castrillo, Michael Storer, and Michael Woods. Meanwhile, Evenepoel and Skjelmose abandon the Tour lower down the mountain.

On the descent, Kuss and Paret-Peintre break away from the other chasers. The two chasers reach the foot of the Aspin 50 seconds behind Martinez, and cut the gap to 35 seconds at the summit. The Johannessen group crests it 2 minutes later.

Kuss and Paret-Peintre catch Martinez on the descent, and as they hit the Col de Peyresourde, their closest chasers are Arensman, Yates, Rodriguez, O’Connor and Johannessen. Early on the climb, they bridge across to the front.

Arensman attacks with just over 4 kilometres to go to the summit. Johannessen and Martinez initially follow, but when he ups the pace again, the Dutchman goes clear. In no time, he puts more than a minute into his former companions, while extending his lead over the peloton from 2 to 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

In the run-up to the final climb, Matteo Jorgenson is dropped from the GC group, while Arensman tackles the ascent itself with a lead of 3 minutes and 13 seconds.

Felix Gall drops the other GC riders on the climb. Halfway up, with 6 kilometres to go, the Dutchman still leads the Pogacar group by 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

With 4 kilometres remaining to the summit, Jonas Vingegaard launches an attack. Tadej Pogacar and Florian Lipowitz follow his move. Pogacar and Vingegaard then take turns by putting pressure on each other, causing Lipowitz to drop behind.

Meanwhile, Arensman climbs stoically towards the finish line, securing the best win in his career. Pogacar outsprints Vingegaard for second place to tightens his grip on the yellow jersey.
