Race report
Lidl-Trek sets the pace in the run-up to the intermediate sprint. Jonathan Milan takes the maximum points, and while the green jersey isn’t secured just yet, things are looking good for the Italian.

Following the sprint, Jonas Abrahamsen continues solo, but once on the Col du Pré, the climbers take control. A group featuring Lenny Martinez, Einer Rubio, Primoz Roglic, Bruno Armirail, Michael Storer, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Tobias Foss, and Victor Campenaerts opens up a gap. When the pace doesn’t suit him, Roglic ups the tempo, and only Martinez is able to respond. Paret-Peintre makes the junction 500 metres from the summit, while the peloton reels in the other attackers.

On the Cormet de Roselend, Martinez can no longer keep up with the pace set by Roglic and Paret-Peintre, but he fights his way back and reaches the summit first — just as he did earlier on the Col du Pré. The peloton crests the climb 45 seconds later.

Roglic continues alone on the descent. Once in the valley, the rain begins to fall, while the adventure of Paret-Peintre and Martinez comes to an end. The only remaining attacker is caught just before the finish climb to La Plagne kicks in.

As soon as the road tilts uphill, Roglic is dropped, after which Thymen Arensman launches an attack with more than 14 kilometres to go to the summit. Tadej Pogacar takes over, with Jonas Vingegaard on his wheel. The Dutchman manages to latch onto the Tour’s two best climbers, before he gives it another shot.

Arensman pulls half a minute clear of the two chasers, where Ben Healy, Florian Lipowitz, Felix Gall, Oscar Onley and Tobias Halland Johannessen regain contact.

With 3 kilometres to the summit, Pogacar, Vingegaard, Lipowitz and Onley are the remaining chasers. The yellow jersey has been setting the pace for several kilometres already. But when Onley drops off, Lipowitz takes over at the front.

Arensman passes under the flamme rouge 15 seconds ahead of the chasing trio. He digs in once more, out of the saddle, while Lipowitz keeps up the pace. In the final 200 metres, Vingegaard launches his sprint, but it’s too late. After his victory in Superbagnères, Arensman triumphs again in La Plagne.

Vingegaard beats Pogacar in the sprint for second place, clawing back a few seconds, but it’s clear as day that the Slovenian has wrapped up overall victory. It’s his fourth in total.
