Race report
Julian Alaphilippe is up for it on Bastille Day. He tackles the first climb with a small lead, and then he is joined by a large group of fellow stage win hopefuls.
The lead group – Victor Campenaerts, Thymen Arensman, Simon Yates, Ben Healy, Neilson Powless, Quinn Simmons, Luke Plapp, Mauro Schmid, Michael Woods, Alexey Lutsenko, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Ilan Van Wilder, Alex Baudin, Harry Sweeny, Lenny Martinez, Quentin Pacher, Julian Alaphilippe, Michael Storer, Ben O’Connor, Raúl García Pierna, Iván Romeo, Bruno Armirail, Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Clément Champoussin, Simone Velasco, Steff Crass, Joe Blackmore, Pablo Castrillo, Anders Halland Johannessen – puts 2 minutes into the peloton.
O’Connor distances the others on the Côte de Charade. Woods, Campenaerts, Healy, Martinez, Arensman, Simmons, Yates, Baudin, and Valentin Paret-Peintre bridge across, while the acceleration stretches the gap to the peloton to nearly 4 minutes.
Some of the dropped riders manage to rejoin the group in the run-up to the Côte de Berzet. Just like on the earlier climbs, Martinez scoops up the maximum mountain points. He does the same at Col de Guéry, taking the polka dot jersey from Tim Wellens in the process.
The peloton crests the Col de la Croix Morand 6 minutes behind the breakaway. Following a flurry of attacks on the run-in to the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert, Simmons launches an acceleration on an uphill drag. Healy closes the gap, towing Storer, Arensman, O’Connor and Yates with him.
Healy, the best-placed rider in the breakaway at 3 minutes 55 behind the yellow jersey, takes up the pace-making in the final phase. His tempo proves too much for Simmons, who loses ground with 14 kilometres remaining.
Yates puts in a dig in Le Mont-Dore, right at the base of the final ascent. O’Connor latches on as the road kicks up, while Arensman regains contact with 2.4 kilometres to go. Just then, Yates goes again. The gap hovers at around 10 metres for a while, but the Brit gradually edges further ahead.
Victory goes to Yates, with Arensman crossing the line 9 seconds later. Healy finishes third, and then it’s a waiting game to see how much time yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar will lose.
After unsuccessfully trying to drop Jonas Vingegaard on the final climb, the Slovenian eventually settles into the wheel of Martinez alongside his Danish rival, with no further attacks. As a result, the yellow jersey passes to the Irishman.
