Race report
The peloton remains intact until the intermediate sprint, where Jonathan Milan picks up the maximum number of points ahead of Mathieu van der Poel and Biniam Girmay. Straight after, Ben Healy and Quinn Simmons launch an attack.
On the Côte du Mont Pinçon, Harold Tejada and Victor Campenaerts bridge across to the leading duo, but the bunch is back on their wheels before the top.
Wout van Aert then makes a move, and Pablo Castrillo goes with him. That move comes to an end just before the Côte de la Rançonnière.
Ben Healy sneaks off the front on the false flat after the Côte de la Rançonnière. He is joined by Mathieu van der Poel, Will Barta, Harold Tejada, and Quinn Simmons.
The peloton keeps up the chase, and with 132 kilometres still to go, Eddie Dunbar jumps across to the breakaway. Michael Storer and Simon Yates join in too.
There’s certainly no let-up in the pace, and attacks keep flying for a while, but the lead group of eight gradually extends its advantage to 4 minutes — putting Van der Poel back in the virtual yellow jersey.
Healy launches an attack with 42 kilometres remaining and opens up a 30-second lead within 5 kilometres. He extends that lead before Simmons and Storer respond by launching the chase.
It’s too little, too late, and Healy powers to an impeccable victory. Van der Poel finishes 4 minutes later to reclaim the yellow jersey, although the margin is just 1 second.
