Race report
Neilson Powless is the first serious attacker. He rides solo at the front for about 20 kilometres before his effort comes to an end. Meanwhile, a crash causes a significant delay in the peloton, allowing a group of around thirty riders to go clear.
From that group, Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, Victor Campenaerts, Tim Wellens, Pascal Eenkhoorn, Neilson Powless, Matej Mohoric, Clément Russo, Kaden Groves, Mattéo Vercher, Tobias Lund Andresen, Alexey Lutsenko, Jake Stewart, Arnaud De Lie, and Jarrad Drizners break away.
The leaders are not given much leeway and Jasper Stuyven, Quinn Simmons and Michael Storer bridge across on the Côte de Saint-Ferréol, while Mattéo Vercher loses cotact.
The Côte de Sorèze shakes things up even more. While Wellens, Campenaerts, Powless, Mohoric and Simmons break away from the front group, numerous riders bridge across from the peloton to the chasing group. One of them is Carlos Rodriguez, who pushes on alone to join the leaders. By the time they reach the top, calm has finally been restored in the peloton.
Andreas Leknessund gives chase on the descent and the Norwegian latches onto the leaders just ahead of the Pas du Sant. Warren Barguil and Aleksandr Vlasov hook on early into the ascent.
Simmons is the only attacker who can follow an acceleration by Storer, while Campenaerts and Wellens regain contact later. The four remain together on the drag that leads up to the summit of the Col de Fontbruno.
Rodriguez, Barguil, Vlasov and Lutsenko catch up just before the summit, and that’s Wellens’ cue to go on the offensive. With 42 kilometres to go, the Belgian champion takes off.
After a few kilometres on the flat, the Belgian champion dives into the descent. He is already 40 seconds ahead of the first chasers at that point, and he continues to extend his lead. After two stage wins in both the Giro and the Vuelta, he now takes his first Tour de France stage victory.
Campenaerts breaks away from the chasing group in the closing kilometres to take second place. Tadej Pogacar finishes safely in the peloton, 6 minutes later.
