Race report
Conditions are wet at the start, but Yevgeniy Fedorov, Bruno Armirail, Andrea Leknessund and Brent Van Moer couldn’t care less. The four open up a 3-minute gap.
Shortly after the intermediate sprint, the breakaway is reeled in with just over 50 kilometres remaining.
On the Côte de Saint-Étienne-au-Mont, Mathieu van der Poel remains in a select group, while his team mate Jasper Philipsen has been dropped. Tadej Pogacar is the first to crest the climb.
Just before the summit of the Côte de Saint-Étienne-au-Mont, Jonas Vingegaard injects a surge. Kévin Vauquelin responds with Matteo Jorgenson on his wheel, but over the final three kilometres the bunch comes back together. Led by Florian Lipowitz, a peloton of some thirty riders enters the climb towards the finish.
Julian Alaphilippe momentarily takes the initiative, only for Mathieu van der Poel to move to the front. He maintains a fierce pace and launches himself in the closing few hundred metres. Holding off the charging Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, the Dutchman claims the victory and also snatches the yellow jersey.
