Tour de Suisse 2025 Route stage 5: La Punt - Santa Maria
Thursday, 19 June – Stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse takes the riders over the Julier Pass and the San Bernardino Pass before finishing atop a 6.4-kilometre climb at 9.5%. The stage is 183.5 kilometres long and includes 3,620 metres of elevation gain.
The riders tackle the final climb not once, but twice, although the first time only partially. On that occasion, it’s a 4.5-kilometre slog at 9.8%. After cresting, they descend back into the valley and, following 8 kilometres on the flat, take on the same ascent again – this time continuing all the way to Santa Maria in Calanca. The full effort comes to 6.4 kilometres at an average gradient of 9.5%.
It’s a finale worthy of any mountain stage, made all the more demanding by the two major climbs earlier in the day.
The stage kicks off in La Punt, from where the riders traverse a 16-kilometre plateau at around 1,700 metres above sea level before reaching the foot of the Julier Pass. Since they begin at altitude, the climb is relatively short – 7.3 kilometres at 6.5%.
What follows is a 49-kilometre descent almost all the way down to the Hinterrhein valley, ending in the town of Thusis – familiar ground from stage 4. Just like then, the riders climb 10.1 kilometres at 4.5% up to the Sufnersee. But instead of turning left towards the Splügen Pass (and Italy), they continue straight on to take on the San Bernardino Pass. This section begins with 16 kilometres of uphill false flat, before the actual ascent adds 7.9 kilometres at 5.7% to the mix.
At the summit of the San Bernardino Pass, there are still 66 kilometres to go. First comes a 40-kilometre descent, and then it’s time for the finale outlined earlier: 4.5 kilometres at 9.8%, followed by the full 6.4-kilometre ascent at 9.5%, all within the final 26.1 kilometres.
