Race report
There’s no lack of trying – quite the opposite – but it takes an eternity for a breakaway to form. It's roughly 80 kilometres in when Andrew August, Georg Zimmermann and Larry Warbasse finally manage to open a gap substantial enough to build on, especially once they are joined by Neilson Powless, Quinn Simmons, Thomas Gloag, Sébastien Grignard and Marius Mayrhofer.
The octet tackles the major climb 2 minutes ahead of the peloton. On the final and most crucial section, the Splügen Pass, Powless, Gloag and Simmons are the last attackers to be reeled in.
With 2 kilometres remaining to the summit, the breakaway consists of João Almeida, Ben O'Connor, Oscar Onley and Felix Gall. Then the Portuguese rider puts in a stinging acceleration and goes clear on his own. GC runner-up Kévin Vauquelin closes the gap to the other three, followed by Pablo Castrillo, Ilan Van Wilder, Oscar Onley, Matthew Riccitello and Clément Champoussin. They reach the summit 50 seconds behind Almeida.
Just before reaching the valley floor, yellow jersey Romain Grégoire, Julian Alaphilippe, and Lennard Kämna manage to rejoin the chasing group.
The chasers hardly gain any ground on Almeida – not even when Onley and O’Connor join forces in the final section. And so the Portuguese rider takes the stage win, while Grégoire retains the yellow jersey. The GC does tighten slightly though, with Almeida now up to seventh place, a little over 2 minutes behind the leader.
