Race report
On the first ascent of the Michaelskreuz, Felix Engelhardt and Julian Alaphilippe launch an attack. After the first passage of the finish line, they are joined by a 26-head group including Lennard Kämna, Matej Mohoric, Kévin Vauquelin, Bart Lemmen, Ben O'Connor, Romain Grégoire, Pablo Castrillo, Lorenzo Fortunato, Benoît Cosnefroy, Warren Barguil, and Quinn Simmons.
The breakaway opens up a gap of over 3 minutes on the peloton. That margin remains steady for dozens of kilometres.
A quartet of riders reach the summit of the final climb, the Michaelskreuz, in first position, Lemmen, Grégoire, Alaphilippe and Vauquelin.
Grégoire opens a gap on the descent and is so strong in the flat final section that he keeps the other three well behind. In the sprint for second place, Bart Lemmen has to concede to Kévin Vauquelin.
The peloton, including top favourite João Almeida, finishes over three minutes later.
