Race report
Approaching the Julier Pass, the first breakaway of the day forms: Ion Izagirre, Pello Bilbao, Marco Haller, Neilson Powless, Ben Swift, Sjoerd Bax, Nicolò Buratti, Léo Bisiaux, Lewis Askey, Javier Romo and Alberto Bettiol.
At the summit of the pass, only Bilbao, Powless and Romo remain at the head of the race, while Aleksandr Vlasov and Lorenzo Fortunato have replaced the others. The peloton is still close behind, but the gap widens on descent and by the time the attackers reach the valley the gap is 2 minutes.
Upon reaching the foot of the San Bernardino Pass, the leaders have added a minute and a half to their advantage. Yet the bunch responds, and by the summit, the gap is trimmed back to 2 minutes, and by the time the leaders hit the penultimate climb, their advantage has dwindled to just a minute.
On the climb, Fortunato and Romo lose contact with the other leaders, while yellow jersey Romain Grégoire is dropped from the peloton.
Bilbao and Vlasov crest the climb in first position, 10 seconds ahead of Powless and 20 seconds up on the reduced favourites group – now down to Kévin Vauquelin, Julian Alaphilippe, João Almeida, Oscar Onley, Felix Gall, Ilan Van Wilder and Matthew Riccitello.
In the valley, Powless regains contact with his former breakaway companions, while Ben O’Connor, Lennard Kämna and Pablo Castrillo bridge across to the GC group. Before the final climb, the chasers reel in the breakaway.
Alaphilippe kicks clear 4 kilometres from the summit, but Onley manages to rejoin him. The Brit then goes solo, with Almeida setting off in pursuit. The Portuguese rider makes the catch with 2 kilometres remaining.
The duo work together to distance the others before Onley outsprints Almeida at the finish. Vauquelin crosses the line 57 seconds later to take over the yellow jersey from Grégoire, who concedes nearly 7 minutes to the stage winner and tumbles down to 13th place in the GC.
