Vuelta 2025 Favourites stage 14: HC Climbers in Action
foto: Cor VosOn paper, the 14th stage of La Vuelta is one of those days that can shape the GC. That doesn’t necessarily mean the red jersey contenders will be fighting for the stage win, though. A breakaway might well have its say – although our money would be on the GC scenario.
Most of the climbing comes in the final 44 kilometres, with the Puerto de San Lorenzo (10.1 kilometres 8.5%) and the Alto de la Farrapona as the last two obstacles. The latter rises for 16.9 kilometres at an average gradient of 5.9%, while the sting is in the tail. The 12th kilometre goes up at 8.5%, the 13th at 9.5%, the 14th at 10%, the 15th at 12%, the 16th at 11.5%, before it ‘eases’ to 8% in the final 500 metres.
In the run-up to those two giants, the riders also face some uncategorised ramps and, around halfway, the Alto Tenebreo: 5.8 kilometres at 6.5%.
On paper, this is one of the toughest days of the entire Vuelta – along with stages 7, 13 and 20 – so it’s likely to see the GC men testing each other. That doesn’t necessarily mean it will be for the stage win, though, as a two-fronted battle is perfectly possible. The breakaway going for the stage glory, and red jersey contenders fighting to put time into their rivals.
