Vuelta 2025 Favourites stage 10: Breakaway artists to the fore

Jay Vine - Vuelta 2025 Favourites stage 10: Stage for the Bravefoto: Cor VosThe stages directly before and after the first rest day share a similar profile: rolling terrain en route and then a climb to the line that levels off near the top. Both stages could go either way. A showdown between the GC contenders or the attackers – although the latter seem more likely to prevail. (Slideshow route/profile)

The key difference is that the opening of stage 10 is slightly flatter than in stage 9, while the climbing that follows is harder. In the run-up to the final ascent, the riders face a series of climbs: 3.7 kilometres at 4.8% (after 63 kilometres), 3.6 kilometres at 5.1% (after 85 kilometres), 2.6 kilometres at 4.5% (after 104 kilometres) and 8.3 kilometres at 4.4% (after 127.7 kilometres).

From the top of that last climb, Alto de las Coronas, the route drops onto a 30-kilometre false flat before the final climb features 9.4 kilometres at 6.3%. The average gradient eases considerably in the last 3 kilometres.

That not-too-daunting finale, much like in stage 9, seems to favour the day’s breakaway. For a real GC battle, the finish would need to be tougher. Although, as ever, it all depends on how the race unfolds.
