Race report

The riders roll out in parade formation to the coast and back to Rome, before the race comes to life in the final 70 kilometres. Ben Turner and Andrea Mifsud break away and spend kilometres riding around 20 seconds ahead of the peloton. At 53 kilometres from the finish, they are caught just before the Red Bull sprint.

Then Tobias Bayer and Rémy Rochas try their luck, while Matteo Sobrero and Victor Campeneaerts rejoin them. Their lead never exceeds 20 seconds either.

Just after the penultimate finish passage, Filippo Ganna and Jasper Stuyven, together with Matteo Sobrero, take control at the front. Or rather, it is Filippo Ganna who does — the other two are sitting on his wheel.

At the start of the final lap, the trio has an 18-second lead, but their attempt is brought back with 3 kilometres to go. Mirco Maestri then attacks, but that move does not get far. In short: it is heading for a bunch sprint on the Via del Circo Massimo.

Jonathan Milan powers to a convincing victory, while Jonas Vingegaard safely finishes in the peloton and seals the overall win.
