Race report

Mattia Bais is the first rider to tackle the Saint-Barthélemy. On the climb, he is joined by a whole string of riders: Luca Vergallito, Martin Marcellusi, Alexander Cepeda, Jardi Christiaan van der Lee, Giulio Ciccone, Enric Mas, Juan Pedro López, Lorenzo Milesi, Einer Rubio, Jan Hirt, David de la Cruz, Mark Donovan, Nickolas Zukowsky, Aleksandr Vlasov, Gianmarco Garofoli, Koen Bouwman, Christopher Juul-Jensen, Warren Barguil, Gijs Leemreize, Mattia Bais, Ludovico Crescioli, Alessandro Tonelli, Igor Arrieta, Jan Christen, Jhonatan Narváez, Wout Poels, Johannes Kulset and Andreas Leknessund.

Christen and Van der Lee break away from that group, with the Dutch rider taking the most mountain points at the summit. The chasers arrive half a minute later, while the Visma | Lease a Bike led peloton follows 2 minutes behind.

In the valley, the group of attackers comes back together again, after which Narváez wins the intermediate sprint and takes over the purple jersey from Paul Magnier. At the top of the second climb, Arrieta outsprints Van der Lee for the mountain points, while on the third climb the Dutch rider is beaten by Ciccone. The Italian also takes full points on the first summit.

While the breakaway builds a maximum lead of 4 minutes over the peloton, that gap has dropped to around 2 minutes on the approach to the final climb.

With 9 kilometres to go to the summit, Poels accelerates and Ciccone and Rubio are the only ones who respond immediately. Further down the climb, pink jersey wearer Afonso Eulálio loses contact with the other general classification riders. Derek Gee-West and Ben O'Connor also drop back.

At the front, a regrouping takes place, but it is only a stay of execution, as the favourites’ group quickly closes in. Ciccone and Rubio make one last all-or-nothing attempt by continuing together in the final 5.5 kilometres, but 400 metres later they see a train led by Davide Piganzoli come past.

With 4.6 kilometres to go, Jonas Vingegaard launches his move. Metre by metre, the Dane distances his rivals and solos to victry, while Felix Gall finishes as the best of the rest for the third time in this Giro.

Afonso Eulálio crosses the line 2 minutes and 26 seconds behind Vingegaard and, although he loses the pink jersey, remains second in the GC. Felix Gall moves up to third place, swapping positions with Thymen Arensman, who drops to fourth.
