fotobureau Cor VosIt is a breakaway day in the Giro d'Italia. Just before the summit of the final climb of the day, Alberto Bettiol powers past Andreas Leknessund and rides solo to victory. The peloton takes it easy and finishes over 13 minutes later, so Afonso Eulálio retains the maglia rosa.

Race report
Attacks are flying from the gun, and after 10 kilometres the break finally forms as Andreas Leknessund, Michael Valgren, Larry Warbasse, Diego Pablo Sevilla, Mark Donovan, Johan Jacobs and Vicente Rojas join forces. Rojas drops back, while a group of five — Jasper Stuyven, Alberto Bettiol, Francesco Buzzato, Mikkel Bjerg and Mirco Maestri — takes his place before Axel Huens, Josh Kench, Toon Aerts and Markus Hoelgaard are the last riders to bridge across.
The attackers tackle the first of the two climbs in the finale over 11 minutes ahead of the peloton.
On the climb to Ungiasca, Kench launches an attack. Only Valgren, Leknessund and Bettiol are able to follow, after which the Norwegian takes over in the final two kilometres before the summit. Just before cresting Bettiol powers past Leknessund. In no time, he opens up a gap of 20 seconds and extends it on the descent.
Bettiol thus takes the second Giro stage win of his career, while the peloton finishes over 13 minutes later. As a result, nothing changes at the top of the GC, and Afonso Eulálio comfortably retains the pink jersey.
