Race report
A group of six riders, including Alberto Bettiol, attacks from the gun. When they are reeled in, Bettiol goes again, this time with Filippo Ganna. They race to a lead of 30 seconds, while the action behind them keeps going.
With roughly 100 kilometres still to go, the attempt by the two Italians comes to an end. The calm certainly does not return. The racing is so intense that nobody manages to get away.
In the final 75 kilometres, a large breakaway takes shape, from which Mikkel Bjerg, Jhonatan Narváez and Andreas Leknessund move clear. They ride to a lead of 1 minute.
On the climb to Montefiore dell’Aso, a chasing group of some fourty riders forms, while the peloton’s deficit grows to over 2 minutes. Among the chasers are Christian Scaroni, Jan Christen, Igor Arrieta, Wout Poels, Frank van den Broek, Filippo Zana, Fabio Van den Bossche, Alessandro Pinarello, Corbin Strong, Ben Turner, Javier Romo, Juan Pedro López, Gianmarco Garofoli and Alexander Jefferson Cepeda
The cooperation among the chasers is far from ideal and they are unable to come closer, which inspires Javier Romo to attempt a solo move to bridge across to the three leaders. To no avail.
On the Muro di Capodarco, Jhonatan Narváez accelerates. He opens a gap and Andreas Leknessund claws his way back, but when the Ecuadorian kicks again he is clear. The Norwegian keeps chasing, but the steep climbs in the finale suit Narváez perfectly and he solos to his second victory of this Giro.
The peloton crosses the line almost 2 minutes later and Afonso Eulálio retains the lead in the general classification, although Jai Hindley and Jonas Vingegaard gain 2 seconds on their rivals by sprinting to the line.
