Race report
Jonas Geens, Axel Huens, Jack Haig, Andreas Leknessund and Guillermo Thomas Silva opens up a lead of 5 minutes over the peloton, while Tarozzi and Warbasse eventually bridge across after spending several dozen kilometres in pursuit.
On the first of the two ascents to Piancavallo, only Jack Haig, Andreas Leknessund and Larry Warbasse remain at the front. As they pass through the ski resort, their lead has dropped to 1 minute and 20 seconds.
At the finish passage, Igor Arrieta and Ludovico Crescioli launch the chase. They pick up Axel Huens and join the leaders at the end of the descent, after which the they continue together on the final climb. Andreas Leknessund and Larry Warbasse manage to hang on for a while, before Crescioli sets off on a solo attack.
With 11 kilometres still to climb, Jonas Vingegaard attacks from the peloton. He immediately powers to the front of the race, with Felix Gall following at a distance.
Further down the climb, Derek Gee-West launches an attack on fourth-placed Thymen Arensman, with Jai Hindley following the Canadian’s move. The pair catch Felix Gall, and they open up enough of a gap to briefly put Arensman’s fourth place under threat. However, Egan Bernal guides his Dutch teammate back onto the wheel of his rivals.
The final mountain stage of the Giro therefore ends without too much drama, but very much in keeping with the script of this race. Jonas Vingegaard solos to a convincing fifth stage victory, while Gall and Hindley finish second and third respectively — positions they also occupy in the general classification.
