Race report

Straight from the start, the riders go all in. A group featuring Tobias Bayer, Cyril Barthe, Axel Huens, Johan Jacobs, Giulio Ciccone, Jonas Rutsch, Iván García, Alessandro Pinarello, Nickolas Zukowsky, Jasper Stuyven, Koen Bouwman, Chris Hamilton, Luca Mozzato, Davide Ballerini, Matteo Malucelli and Christian Scaroni forces a gap. It hovers around 15 seconds for a while before growing to half a minute. But if the peloton keeps chasing, it’s gruppo compatto again after 30 kilometres.

It remains unsettled, and after several unsuccessful breakaway attempts Chris Harper, Andreas Leknessund and Mattia Bais join forces. They are later joined by Alberto Bettiol, Jasper Stuyven, Edward Planckaert, Diego Ulissi, Aleksandr Vlasov, Nico Denz, Markus Hoelgaard, Tim Naberman and Ludovico Crescioli.

They stretch their lead to 1 minute and a half, but on the climb in La Foce the gap drops below 1 minute, and Enric Mas and Lennert Van Eetvelt decide to take up the chase. They bridge across on the Passo del Termine, where Jhonathan Narváez, Christian Scaroni, Brieuc Rolland, Filippo Zana, Warren Barguil, Alessandro Tonelli and Martin Marcellusi also make it into the breakaway.

The Colle di Guaitarola reduces the lead group to Ulissi, Mas, Harper, Narváez, Crescioli, Barguil, Scaroni, Zana and Van Eetvelt. They reach the summit 4 minutes ahead of the peloton, while Stuyven, Vlasov and Tonelli regain contact on the plateau afterwards.

Van Eetvelt, Zana and Scaroni hit the deck in the downhill. Stuyven, Vlasov and Narváez, meanwhile, jump clear and start the Colla dei Scioli with a small lead. On the climb, they are rejoined by Harper, Mas, Crescioli, Barguil and Ulissi before the latter strikes inside the last 2 kilometres. Only Harper, Mas, Vlasov and Narváez are able to follow that move straight away, Crescioli hooks up upon cresting.

On the climb to Cogorno, Mas accelerates with Narváez on his wheel. They move through the village with a 26-second lead over the first chasers.

The two ride together to the finish in Chiavari, where Narváez takes the sprint with ease. Over three minutes later, Afonso Eulálio finishes safely in the peloton, retaining his grip on the pink jersey.
