Race report

Jardi Christiaan van der Lee attacks from the flag with Johan Jacobs and Tim Nabermann on his wheel. Once they are reeled back in, Jacobs goes again, this time with Diego Ulissi, Markel Beloki, Nelson Oliveira, Ludovico Crescioli, Christopher Juul-Jensen, Antonio Morgado, Simone Gualdi, Manuele Tarozzi, Frank van den Broek and Tim Torn Teutenberg.

The peloton keeps the attackers within striking distance, and the cards are reshuffled on the first climb. Giulio Ciccone is first to crest with fellow-attackers Einer Rubio, Jardi Christiaan van der Lee, Josh Kench, Juan Pedro López, Chris Harper, Filippo Zana, Alan Hatherly, Frank van den Broek, Alessandro Tonelli, Jan Christen, Jhonatan Narváez and Diego Ulissi.

Giulio Ciccone takes maximum points on the second climb as well. He immediately presses on and puts half a minute into the first chasers, but then he sits up and waits for Narváez, Ulissi, Harper, Rubio and Ciccone himself. The Italian continues his pursuit of the mountains jersey on the third and fourth climb.

All the while, the peloton keeps the attackers within striking distance, with a maximum gap of 2 minutes.

On leaving the circuit through the Brenno valley, Diego Ulissi is no longer at the head of the race. Narváez takes full points at the intermediate sprint to close in on Paul Magnier in the fight for the maglia ciclamino. The Ecuadorian trails by just 2 points.

While Giulio Pellizzari is dropped early on the climb to Carì, and Afonso Eulálio and Ben O’Connor are also unable to keep up with the pace, Harper is the last attacker to be reeled in.

At 6.5 kilometres from the summit, the leading group features Jonas Vingegaard, Davide Piganzoli, Felix Gall, Thymen Arensman, Egan Bernal and Jai Hindley when the pink jersey attacks. He quickly opens a gap and, as in previous mountain stages, Felix Gall is the only one who puts up any resistance, but he eventually gives in and drops back to the other chasers.

As Jonas Vingegaard rides out to a lead of more than one minute, Thymen Arensman attacks inside the final 2 kilometres. Only Felix Gall and Jai Hindley are able to follow, while Derek Gee-West regains contact just before the flamme rouge.

Jonas Vingegaard underlines his dominance in the mountains at this Giro with a fourth stage win, before Felix Gall drops his rivals in the final kilometres with a sharp acceleration. Jai Hindley crosses the line in third, with Thymen Arensman fourth.

The trio are now all within a minute of each other in second, third and fourth place overall, setting up a fascinating battle for the final podium.
