Race report
Attacks come and go in the first 25 kilometres, before Marion Borras, Linda Laporta, and Maureen Arens make a move. They are first joined by Aniek van Alphen, Romy Kasper, Amalie Dideriksen and Aidi Gerde Tuisk, and later also by Justine Ghekiere, Susanne Andersen, Mie Bjørndal Ottestad, and Josie Nelson — but the gap never exceeds 20 seconds.
The peloton regroups at kilometre 37, after which India Grangier decides it’s solo time. Her move lasts 9 kilometres before the bunch comes back together.
On the Alto del Moncayo, Erica Magnaldi rides alone at the front for a while , but by the time she reaches the summit, she’s been reeled back in. Justine Ghekiere takes the maximum mountain points at the top.
The bunch stays together after that, and at the intermediate sprint in Novallas it’s Femke Gerritse, Demi Vollering and Marianne Vos who battle it out. They cross the line in that order, picking up 6, 4 and 2 seconds respectively.
No one manages to break away on the Puerto de El Buste. Vos crests the climb in the front group, while red jersey Gerritse loses contact in the final 600 metres.
Cédrine Kerbaol attacks on the descent, and once she is reeled in, Anna van der Breggen opens up a gap. In the group behind, Gerritse regains contact with the help of Mischa Bredewold.
Van der Breggen solos to victory in the final 7 kilometres, while Vos beats Vollering in the sprint for second place. Gerritse finishes seventh and retains the lead in the overall standings.
