Records
The most stage wins in La Vuelta Femenina were achieved by Dutch riders. Marianne Vos and Demi Vollering both won six stages.
The 2025 edition turned out to be a Dutch celebration from start to finish. Ellen van Dijk claimed the red jersey in the opening day’s team time trial, and every single stage was won by a Dutch rider.
Demi Vollering holds the record for the most overall victories in the Vuelta Femenina with two, although if you include its predecessors, Annemiek van Vleuten leads the way with three.
Predecessors
La Vuelta Femenina has been in its current form since 2023, but its first predecessor dates back to 2015. In the initial three years, the race was known as La Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta, which was a one-day criterium race in the centre of Madrid on the final day of the men’s Vuelta. In 2017 and 2018, the women’s race expanded to a two-day event under the name Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta, and in the subsequent three years, one additional stage was added each time. However, the race still coincided with the Vuelta for men.
So, the history of La Vuelta Femenina is similar to that of the Tour de France Femmes and La Course. It started as a one-day race and gradually evolved into something bigger. The 2023 edition was the first to take place in the spring, entirely detached from the men’s race.
