Race report
The peloton remains bunched for most of the first and only climb of the day, but just before the summit, several riders jump clear. Ane Santesteban is among them, and she takes most KOM points at the summit. The attack doesn’t stick though, and everything comes back together on the descent.
Back on the flat, Elena Cecchini goes solo. Her attempt comes to an end 64 kilometres from the finish.
Despite attacks from Kristen Faulkner and Lea Lin Teutenberg, the peloton is heading towards a bunch sprint. As a warm-up, Marianne Vos wins the intermediate sprint and grabs 6 bonus seconds. Femke Gerritse crosses the line in second place and takes 4 seconds. As a result, she is the virtual GC leader.
For much of the day, rain falls, leading to quite a few crashes and slips. This continues into the finale, but Vos remains unfazed. She kicks hard out of the final sharp turn, immediately opens a gap, and sprints to her first win of the season, with Letizia Paternoster following at a respectable distance. Thanks to the 6 bonus seconds, the Italian moves ahead of Gerritse and takes the lead in the GC.
