Tour de France 2026: Philipsen triumphs in dramatic showdown

Race report
The attacks come thick and fast in the opening phase, before a group containing Van der Poel, Simmons, Jorgenson, Stuyven, Baudin, Bernal, Benoot, Castrillo, Mohoric, Tarling, Tejada and Braz Afonso manages to gain a small advantage on the approach to the Col des Prés. The front of the peloton comes across on the climb. The sprinters have been dropped, but they are close behind. Del Toro and Pidcock are also in the group with Pedersen, Kooij and Philipsen.

On the Côte de Saint-Jean d'Arvey, Van der Poel, Benoot, Simmons, Bernal and a handful of other riders break clear before Pogacar, Evenepoel, Seixas, Ayuso and Skjelmose bridge across.

The gap between the breakaway and the Del Toro group has grown to 50 seconds as the GC riders drop back from the breakaway. This leaves a breakaway group of 16 riders: Per Strand Hagenes, Jay Hindley, Quinn Simmons, Alex Baudin, Mathieu van der Poel, Matej Mohoric, Egan Bernal, Joshua Tarling, Jasper Stuyven, Tiesj Benoot, Felix Engelhardt, Pablo Castrillo, Einer Rubio, Clément Braz Afonso, Guillaume Martin and Rick Pluimers

Decathlon CMA CGM lead the chase for a while in support of their sprinter Olav Kooij, but when they ease off with around 80 kilometres to go, Matteo Jorgenson, Ben Healy and Mathis Le Berre go clear. The trio make the catch after a 12-kilometre chase.

By this point, the pace has picked up again in the peloton, with Uno-X Mobility helping to drive the chase. When the gap is down to 20 seconds, Mads Pedersen jumps across to the leaders on his own. Later, a group containing Olav Kooij, Michael Matthews, Michał Kwiatkowski and Edward Planckaert also makes the junction.

With 57 kilometres to go, Mads Pedersen, Ben Healy, Michał Kwiatkowski, Felix Engelhardt, Jasper Stuyven and Edward Planckaert break clear. The pace drops behind, allowing a group containing Jasper Philipsen to bridge the gap with 43 kilometres remaining.

After Pedersen wins the intermediate sprint, Stuyven attacks from the breakaway. Around 10 kilometres later, the group containing Kooij, Philipsen and Matthews makes the junction with the attacker's former breakaway companions.

Stuyven's effort comes to an end with 3.7 kilometres remaining and, after shutting down a late attack, Van der Poel produces a masterful lead-out for Philipsen. The Belgian finishes the job in style, with Schmid and Kooij, who take second and third, unable even to get on his wheel.

Jordan Jegat is the only rider from the top 10 to finish in the first group. The 27-year-old Frenchman gains plenty of time, although he remains ninth overall. The rest of the standings remain unchanged, with Tadej Pogacar leading well ahead of Remco Evenepoel and Isaac del Toro.
