Tour de France 2026: Evenepoel triumphs at Plateau de Solaison

Race report
Despite several attacks, the peloton remains together on the Côte des Rousses. Valentin Paret-Peintre outsprints Richard Carapaz for the mountain points at the summit, after which Thymen Arensman launches an attack alongside Xabier Mikel Azparren.

The pair spend several kilometres holding a 20-second advantage over the peloton before a group of eight bridges across: Nelson Oliveira, Michael Matthews, Mauro Schmid, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Anders Skaarseth, Tim van Dijke, Rául Garcia Pierna and Ion Izagirre. The peloton continues to chase before making the catch with 106 kilometres remaining.

Nicolas Vinokurov is the next rider to attack, and the Kazakh is joined by a group of 24 riders featuring Egan Bernal, Matej Mohoric, Tom Pidcock, Einer Rubio, Adam Yates, Yannis Voisard, Ilan Van Wilder, Ben Healy, Mauro Schmid, Ewen Costiou, Yannis Voisard and Quinn Simmons. This group is given leeway and opens up a 3-minute lead.

The breakaway shatters on the Col de la Croisette as Pidcock sets the pace, with Simmons, Van Wilder, Voisard, Schmid, Costiou, Rubio and Yates glued to his wheel. Van Wilder and Schmid are distanced some 2 kilometres from the summit, while Simmons goes the other way and attacks. He crests 5 seconds ahead of Pidcock, Voisard, Yates and Rubio, after which they come together in the downhill.

Costiou and Schmid rejoin the leaders on the Côte du Mont, after which the Swiss rider goes clear on the descent.

While Visma | Lease a Bike leads the chase in the peloton, Jonas Vingegaard and Isaac del Toro hit the deck. The double Tour de France Champion is forced to abandon.

Simmons drops his companions and closes the gap to Schmid with just over 9 kilometres left to climb. Further down the mountain, yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar sets the pace in the favourites' group. One by one, the other riders are dropped until only his teammate Isaac del Toro and Remco Evenepoel remain on his wheel.

The trio bridges across to the front of the race before Remco Evenepoel shuts down an attack from Isaac del Toro inside the final kilometre. Half a kilometre later, he does it again.

The Belgian carries that momentum into the finish, launching his sprint for the line. Pogacar stays on his wheel, while Evenepoel powers to victory to claim his first major mountain stage win.

Pogacar retains the overall lead, and Evenepoel and Del Toro move up to second and third in the GC.
