Race report
In the run-up to the hills, a 31-rider group featuring Thymen Arensman, Mathieu van der Poel, Louis Vervaeke, Ben O'Connor, Jonas Abrahamsen, Marco Frigo, Javier Romo, Ion Izagirre, Romain Grégoire, Alex Baudin, Kévin Vauqelin, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Luke Plapp, Ben Healy, Sergio Higuita, Jordan Jegat, Harold Tejada en Marc Hirschi set off.
The breakaway crests the Côte de Pailherols 1 minute ahead of the peloton. Not long afterwards, Romo, Tejada and Jegat go clear together. The latter can't match the pace, while Romo and Tejada extend their lead over the peloton to 1 minute and a half.
On the Col de la Griffoul, the chasing group splits apart, while Romo pushes on alone. He reaches the summit 35 seconds ahead of Valentin Paret-Peintre, Alex Baudin and Ramses Debruyne, while the UAE Emirates led peloton is chasing at 1 minute.
The three chasers are swept up in the run-up to the Côte de Murat. Romo is then caught on the lower slopes of the Puy Mary, before Richard Carapaz makes his move with 6.9 kilometres of climbing remaining. The Ecuadorian reaches the summit with a 20-second lead over what remains of the peloton.
By the time he reaches the valley floor, Carapaz is over 1 minute clear. He holds on to that advantage on the penultimate climb, the Col de Pertus, although it begins to shrink on the steep upper slopes. When it is down to 45 seconds, Tadej Pogacar attacks from the chasing group and catches the lone leader just 250 metres from the summit. The yellow jersey immediately powers past the former Olympic champion.
While they're catching Carapaz, the chasing group cuts Pogacar's lead to 20 seconds. He takes that lead onto the Col de Font de Cère, a gap he extends on the climb. In the background, Remco Evenepoel is struggling.
Evenepoel refuses to give in and, in the closing kilometres, fights his way back to Jonas Vingegaard, Paul Seixas, Florian Lipowitz, Juan Ayuso and Mattias Skjelmose. He then hits the front of the group and sprints to second place, 32 seconds by the undisputed stage winner, Tadej Pogacar.
