Clément Berthet was the first rider to abandon the Tour de France. The Frenchman crashed in the opening team time trial after losing control on a manhole cover. Although he finished the stage, he was too badly injured to take the start of stage 2.

The 2025 Tour also began with a peloton of 184 riders. Filippo Ganna and Stefan Bissegger both crashed early in the opening stage, just moments apart. Although they remounted, neither made it to the finish. Other high-profile withdrawals in 2025 included João Almeida, Remco Evenepoel and Mathieu van der Poel.
