Tour of Valencia 2024: McNulty wins at Alto del Miserat to take race lead

Race report
Despite several early attempts there is still no break on the Puerto de Benimantell. Then, after 42 kilometres of action, a group of seven riders join forces. Sam Oomen, Alex Molenaar, Pelayo Sánchez, Mikel Bizkarra, Jokin Murguilday, James Whelan, Manuele Tarozzi and Fernando Tercero open up a 3 minutes lead.

While descending towards the foot of the brutal Alto del Miserat, the riders receive the message that the finish will be relocated due to a fatality near the original finish line. So some 15 kilometrs are cut off and the finish is moved to the Miserat.

The peloton reels in the lead group just before the finish climb. Well and truly on the steep ramps four riders are left at the front – Vlasov, McNulty, Buitrago and breakaway boy Berhe. The first three push on together.

McNulty sneaks away when the climb flattens out. He consolidates his lead on the steep final kilometres to take both teh stage win and leader’s jersey.
