Tour of Valencia 2024: Tonelli crown duo attack to take race lead

Race report
Fransisco Muñoz is the first attacker of the day and kilometres later he establishes the breakaway with Jetse Bol, Alex Molenaar, Gorka Sorarrain and Alessandro Tonelli. Iñigo Elosegui and Manuele Tarozzi make it seven at the front and they race to a lead of 9 minutes.

The gap has fallen to 3 minutes at the foot of the last climb, Desert de las Palmes, when Tonelli and Tarozzi leave the others behind. Sorarrain tracks the two team mates down, but he can't keep up.

The peloton reaches the summit of the Desert de las Palmes 2.20 minutes after the Italians. Matej Mohoric decides it's time to showcase his talents and he distances the others. He gobbles up several attackers, but without reaching the race leaders.

Although Tonelli misses in a corner in the last kilometre, the Bardiani duo takes the win. Tarozzi waits for his leader to let him take the win and the leader's jersey.
