Tour de Romandie 2025 Route stage 4: Sion - Thyon 2000
The starting town of Sion sits beautifully in the Rhône Valley. If you wish, you can start the climb to Thyon 2000 directly from the town, but the riders won’t have it that easy. They are first sent into the mountains on the opposite side of the valley.
After a short stint on the flat, the first climb rises over 14.5 kilometres with an average gradient of 7% to Anzère. On the descent, the riders don’t drop all the way back to the valley but first tackle the climb to Lens: 3.8 kilometres at 5.8%. Only then do they speed back down towards the Rhône.
Over the next 20 kilometres, the riders criss-cross the valley before heading back into the mountains. First, it’s an 11.4-kilometre slog at 6.9% to Nax. There’s hardly a descent to speak of before the next climb adds 5.8 kilometres at 5.1% to the mix.
The descent back to the Rhône Valley has a flat section midway, but eventually, the riders do reach the bottom, and then it’s time for the grand finale. The finish climb to Thyon 2000 is 20.2 kilometres long with an average gradient of 7.7%. It’s a fairly steady effort, though the riders will have to brace themselves for sections of around 10% near kilometre 19.
Thyon 2000 hosted two Tour de Romandie stage finishes in the past four years. In 2021, Michael Woods won in dreadful weather after his breakaway companion Geraint Thomas slipped out of his pedals and crashed while launching his sprint. Two years ago, Adam Yates attacked from the leading group in the final 4 kilometres to solo to victory.
The first thee riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
