Race report
The breakaway riders are Bauke Mollema, Stefan Küng, Tobias Bayer, and Huub Artz. Bayer can't follow the pace, and the other three put 6 minutes into the peloton.
On the Col du Mollendruz, Mollema loses contact with the break as the gap drops to under 3 minutes. Küng pushes on alone, with still 46 kilometres left to race.
Küng’s solo effort comes to an end inside the final 12 kilometres, and from there it’s all about the uphill run-in to the line. The pace is relentless, and only a small group remains under the flamme rouge. That’s when Jay Vine launches his attack – no one responds, and he immediately opens up a sizeable gap. A gap big enough to hold off the chasers. He crosses the line with 2 seconds to spare, before Lenny Martinez edges João Almeida in the sprint for second place.
Race leader Alex Baudin finishes safely in the front group to retain the red jersey.
