Vuelta 2025 Route stage 15: Vegadeo - Monforte de Lemos
Sunday, 7 September - La Vuelta's 15th stage takes the riders from Vegadeo to Monforte de Lemos. The route covers 167.8 kilometres with 3,287 metres of elevation gain, the majority of which is packed into the first 60 kilometres.
In 2021, the Vuelta also finished in Monforte de Lemos, with a route strikingly similar to this year’s. That day, the racing was relentless from the start, culminating in Magnus Cort sprinting to victory from the breakaway. There’s a good chance we’ll see a similar scenario play out this time around.
The race climbs from the start on the Puerto A Garganta: 16.5 kilometres with an average gradient of 4.9%. The descent is brief, just a few kilometres, before the route continues in undulating fashion for about 20 kilometres. Then comes the Alto de Barbeitos, a climb that will certainly test the legs.
The stats of the Barbeitos – 11.9 kilometres at 3.9% – might not seem too daunting, but its irregular gradients add an extra challenge. The first 5 kilometres range from 4% to 7%, followed by a false flat section, before the final kilometre kicks up to 8%.
The Barbeitos also featured in the 2021 stage to Monforte de Lemos. After cresting the climb, the riders follow the same roads for roughly 45 kilometres, with rolling terrain leading to a descent into Castroverde. Here, the route diverges from the 2021 stage, heading more directly southwards towards the finish.
With 43.5 kilometres remaining, the riders rejoin the old route. Just over 10 kilometres later, the road climbs for 4.4 kilometres at 4.4%, marking the final uphill section of the day. A descent comes 4 kilometres later, while the final 20 kilometres are almost entirely flat.
The first three riders across the line gain 10, 6 and 4 bonus seconds, while the intermediate sprint carries 6, 4 and 2 seconds.
